Under-pressure Jose Mourinho will hope for a welcome reprieve when he sets his side up for the Capital One clash with Stoke at the Britannia Stadium later this evening.
Mourinho was sent to the stands on Saturday as his Blues side lost 2-1 to West Ham United, the fifth time the club had lost in the league this season.
The result left the club 15th in the table on 11 points and the pressure very much on Mourinho. Early reports indicate that he has two games to save his job, starting against the Potters midweek.
Mourinho will be without some key men for the clash with Thibaut Courtois (knee) and Branislav Ivanovic (hamstring both injured and Nemanja Matic suspended following his red card at Upton Park.
In addition to missing the influential trio, Mourinho must also plan without Spanish forward Pedro and former Newcastle United man, Loic Remy.
Stoke meanwhile are a point and a place above Chelsea in the table and will also head into the cup clash on the back of a defeat after going down 2-0 at home to Watford.
“I don’t anticipate they’ll be in the position they are for too much longer,” said the former Chelsea forward.
“Chelsea have quality right throughout the club that will enable them to come through this moment I’m sure.”
While Stoke may have made a similar start to the season, Hughes still took time out from his own preparations to offer his support to his opposite number.
Mark Hughes’ side are set to receive a very welcome boost ahead of the game with captain Ryan Shawcross set to make his first appearance of the season following back surgery.
Hughes will also have forward Mame Biram Diouf available after compassionate leave, however key Spanish pair Bojan Krkic and Marc Muniesa are doubts with toe and thigh injuries respectively.
Predictably, Chelsea are the favourites to win the match at Evens, however there are many who may fancy the Stoke home win, which can be backed at 3/1, a price which looks plenty of value.
