Less than 18 months after Argentina lost the final to Germany in Rio de Janeiro, Gerardo Martino’s side will take on Brazil in a world cup qualifier.
Argentina will be without a trio of attacking for the game with Carlos Tevez joining Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero on the sidelines.
The Boca Juniors star has a sprained left knee, with his absence confirmed by the Argentine FA on Tuesday via a statement.
“The forward is carrying a muscle strain and a sprain in his left knee and as a result will not start in either of the two next qualifiers,” the federation said.
“Carlitos, who was present yesterday in training but did not carry out any activities, was once more at the Julio Humberto Grondona complex but again did not participate in exercises.
“He left the squad to continue recovery in his club, Boca.”
The absence of the highly-rated trio means that the equally talented Gonazlo Higuain, Angel Di Maria, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Angel Correa and Nicolas Gaitan will provide the attacking spark.
Martino will also have to rely on his fringe defenders with Pablo Zabaleta and Ezequiel Garay also injured as he looks to build on a return of one point from their opening two games.
The Argentines are currently 4th from bottom of the group, five points off leaders Uruguay. They lost 2-0 at home to Ecuador before picking up their first point away to Paraguay.
Brazil meanwhile are two points better off having won one and lost one. Dunga’s men lost 2-0 to Chile in their opening game before beating Venezuela 3-1.
Brazil will have Neymar available again after a four-game suspension following his actions at the Copa America.
