Liverpool move ahead of Chelsea in battle for Mauro Icardi

Liverpool have overtaken Chelsea in the race to sign in-demand Inter Milan forward Mauro Icardi.

The Metro and Tuttosport both claim that Jurgen Klopp has earmarked Icardi as the perfect foil for Coutinho, Firmino, and Ibe, and is willing to pay around £25 million for his services.

Liverpool are notably short of options in attack – with Sturridge struggling to stay fit, Danny Ings ruled out for most of the season, and Mario Balotelli on loan at AC Milan.

If the Reds do complete the deal, it remains to be seen what the future may hold for summer signing Christian Benteke; he has impressed so far at Anfield, but questions remain over whether or not his playing style fits in with Klopp’s footballing philosophy.

Icardi started his career at Fiorentina, but moved to Inter back in 2013 and has since gone on to score 39 goals in 80 games for the Serie A giants.
