Man United target Mats Hummels set to hand in Borussia Dortmund transfer request

Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels is reportedly set to hand in a transfer request at the club ahead of the January transfer window, according to the Daily Star.

The Star is reporting that he has fallen out with manager Thomas Tuchel, and German publication Bild now claiming that he is prepared to hand in a transfer request.

The news will come as a big boost to Manchester United, who the Star claim have been tracking the World Cup winner since the summer.

It’s been no secret that United need more options in defence, having been forced to use utility man Daley Blind in the heart of the back four, and it now appears that manager Louis van Gaal could be about to get their man (via Star).

When that initial interest was shown over the summer The Star reports that Hummel confessed to being flattered by their interest, but instead opted to remain with Dortmund.

“When the big clubs like Manchester United come for you, it’s a big honour and a good thing,” he’d said.

“But I decided to stay this year.”

However, The Star round off their report by suggesting that United could move for the 26-year-old in January should he decide to force a way out of the Bundesliga giants sooner rather than later.
