Arsenal hope to beat Chelsea to star striker’s signature

Arsenal are hoping to beat Chelsea to the signing of Mauro Icardi, according to reports.

The Metro have claimed that Wenger has become convinced of Arsenal’s need for another forward player who can share the goal-scoring burden with Oliver Giroud and Alexis Sanchez, and have identified the Inter Milan player as the perfect fit.

It was previously thought that Icardi was close to joining Chelsea – a club that are also desperate to add to their attacking ranks – but the Gunners are now confident of gazumping them at the last minute.

The striker would cost Arsenal around £35 million, and while the Wenger of old might not have been willing to spend such vast sums, the ending of Arsenal’s stadium debt and the new Premier League TV deal mean the Arsenal boss has been happier to part with the club’s cash in recent seasons.

Whether or not Icardi does sign for the London side, it certainly seems probable that he’ll be on the move this January, with the Premier League being his most likely destination.
