Everton star Gerard Deulofeu handed his side the lead against Middlesbrough on Tuesday night with a piece of individual brilliance.
The 21-year-old scored his third goal of the season as he created himself some space on the edge of the box with some trickery before sending his effort beyond Tomas Mejias.
It had been an even start to the game with both sides enjoying a decent amount of position, but the visitors made the all-important breakthrough against a Middlesbrough side that have been impressive at home so far this season.
Nevertheless, with Romelu Lukaku a constant threat up front with his power and pace, Roberto Martinez’s side looked a handful throughout the start of the first half as they attempt to advance deeper in the competition.
As for Middlesbrough, manager Aitor Karanka will undoubtedly want to progress as far into the tournament as possible but the club’s priority will be to secure promotion to the Premier League as they currently sit just two points adrift of Championship leaders Brighton.
However, they have it all to do on Tuesday night if they wish to extend their Capital One Cup participation as they trail their rivals by two goals. Romelu Lukaku headed home the second goal of the night after more impressive work from Deulofeu down the right flank, as he went from goalscorer to provider to put his side in a commanding position.
