After a rocky patch, it seems that Manuel Pellegrini’s side are back to normal business as Manchester City returned to the summit of the league at the weekend with a 3-1 win at home to Southampton, the three points coming after back to back losses to Liverpool and Juventus.
Goals from Kevin de Bruyne, Fabian Delph and Aleksandar Kolarov sealed the points and was enough to move them ahead of Leicester City at the top on goal difference.
City are set for a very welcome boost with David Silva in line to make a first start since his return to action from injury. The Spanish playmaker has missed the last two months but make his comeback against Southampton and is now in line for a first start on Tuesday.
Joe Hart is still out injured so Willy Caballero will continue between the sticks while any other changes will be kept to a minimum as Manuel Pellegrini focuses on reaching the semi-finals.
Definitely out for the light blues are Pablo Zabaleta, Vincent Kompany, Eliaquim Mangala and Samir Nasri.
Hull meanwhile relinquished their lead at the top of the Championship with a 2-0 loss at home to Derby, which was only their first defeat in their past fourteen games. Manager Steve Bruce could opt to freshen up his side with the games coming thick and fast and with the busy Christmas fixture list approaching.
Winger Robert Snodgrass could make his first appearance of the season following injury while defender Andy Robertson back after a one-match ban and could feature.
The Tigers, losers in five of their last 9 meetings with City, will be without Michael Dawson.
Bruce’s men have failed to beat City away in any competition since 1930, when they won 2-1 in the FA Cup.
The last time these two met in the League cup, in October 1963, City won 3-0.
It should be a cracker of a cup tie, with Steve Bruce no dobut eager to test his side against one of the Premier League’s best sides.
