Video: Sadio Mane goal – Liverpool shocked as soft defending gifts Southampton opener inside 40 seconds

Liverpool were left shellshocked as they conceded inside 40 seconds of their Capital One Cup quarter-final tie with Southampton this evening courtesy of a gift-wrapped Sadio Mane header.

The Saints scored almost straight from kick-off, with one of the first Liverpool touches being Adam Bogdan picking the ball out of his own net after Mane nodded in Ryan Bertrand’s deep delivery.

Jurgen Klopp will be furious with the soft Liverpool defending. Alberto Moreno allowed the Senegalese winger to get in front of him at the back post after Emre Can’s poor attempt to block the cross.

This can only be put down to the Reds not being switched on, although they have improved defensively under Klopp – keeping three clean sheets in the process of winning six of their last seven games.

Tonight’s winner at St Mary’s – extra time and a penalty shootout will be required if necessary  – will join Manchester City, Everton and Stoke City in the last four. It won’t be Liverpool unless they wake up.
