£20m International stopper responds to Liverpool transfer talk; wants Champions League football

Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland has rejected the suggestion that he is about to quit the Potteries for Liverpool and has insisted that he is happy with life at the Britannia Stadium.

The young stopper has been linked with a move to Anfield in recent weeks [The Sun], with Jurgen Klopp understood to be keen on bringing the youngster to Merseyside.

However, speaking to Sky Sports [as per the Mirror], Butland has rejected the suggestion that he’s on the brink of a move to Anfield but admitted that it’s flattering to be linked with a move to the five-time European giants.

“It is obviously wonderful to be linked with a club with the history of Liverpool but anything beyond that is purely speculation and rumours,” the 22-year-old began.

“But at the minute, I can’t fault where I am. I am in a brilliant squad who are playing extremely well and things are looking bright for the club.

“The Champions League has always been a target of mine. I do want to play at the top. But right now I can’t see any better place for me to be. I am learning every week and I am playing with some great players. I am really happy with the goalie coach and I’m learning a lot from the staff as well.

“I believe that we can do some really good things at Stoke, so that is where my whole focus is at the minute.”

Belgian stopper Simon Mignolet has not always convinced since moving to Liverpool from Sunderland in 2013, and despite being offered a new contract at Anfield [Goal], it remains to be seen whether the international is the right man to take Liverpool to the next level.

Butland, by contrast, has been outstanding since replacing Asmir Begovic as No. 1 at Stoke, and looks a safe bet to make England’s Euro 2016 squad.

The Sun reported, as above, that the Reds were planning a £20 million swoop for the guardsman.
