Tottenham new stadium: Green light finally given for £400m ground bigger than Arsenal’s Emirates

Tottenham Hotspur have taken a giant step towards moving into London’s biggest club football stadium.

Haringey Council last night passed, by a vote of 8-2, Spurs’s revised proposal to build a 61,080-seater stadium adjacent to their current White Hart Lane home, at a meeting which ran into the early hours.

According to Sky Sports, the project will cost £400m and is expected to be completed in time for the 2018-19 season, with Tottenham’s last season at White Hart Lane next year’s 2016-17 campaign.

The Lilywhites will require a temporary home for one season, with Wembley Stadium and ground shares with West Ham United – at the Olympic Stadium – and MK Dons having been mooted, Sky Sports adds.

Tottenham’s new home will have a capacity 648 greater than Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium – opened in 2006 – and be smaller only than Manchester United’s Old Trafford, as it stands in the Premier League.

London Mayor Boris Johnson must yet approve the proposal, but has previously stated his enthusiasm for the building of the stadium and the use of it for NFL matches, the London Evening Standard reports.

The NFL matches will be played on a retractable pitch, with other facilities in the stadium including a hotel, health centre and sports centre. Four hundred flats will also be built as part of the development.

Tottenham have played at White Hart Lane since 1899. It has been the home of eight FA Cup-winning teams, two UEFA Cup-winning sides and two title triumphs, the last of which was in 1961-62.

Spurs finally look like potential champions again under Mauricio Pochettino. Will the cost of their new stadium derail their progress on the pitch, as it did Arsenal? Or could it take them to the next level?
