Ex-Middlesbrough frontman Maccarone is a player who has always been capable of the spectacular, and he proved it again on Saturday when he fired home a close-range volley to give Empoli a 2-1 lead over Bologna in Serie A.
However, the Rossoblu are made of sterner stuff since Roberto Donadoni replaced Delio Rossi in October, and after coming back already from 1-0 down to make it 1-1—when Franco Brienza cancelled out Manuel Pucciarelli’s effort—they again equalised when in-form Mattia Destro equalised just before the break.
However, veteran Maccarone struck again in the second half—moments after the pause—to give Empoli a 3-2 lead which Bologna—suffering only their second loss following Donadoni’s appointment—couldn’t respond to.
The win takes Empoli up to sixth place ahead of Sunday’s matches.
