Under-fire pair Manchester United and Chelsea will meet this evening with the spot-light firmly on both teams.
United have slipped from first to sixth in recent weeks, following a run of five games without a win as the Red Devils Premier League ambitions have suddenly taken a dent, with fans and punters scratching their heads over Van Gaal’s system of playing.
The club have lost their last three league games, going down to Norwich, Bournemouth and Stoke in what have been lacklustre displays. The defeats have piled the pressure on manager Louis Van Gaal with reports indicating he could be gone if he fails to win tonight.
Regardless of who is in the dug-out, there are still some big decisions to be made with a plethora of recdent signings failing to live up to expecatations. Manchester United have a number of injury worries, and will be without Jesse Lingard, Matteo Darmian, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia while it remains to be seen if Wayne Rooney will start after starting the defeat to Stoke on the bench.
Bastian Schweinsteiger should return after missing the last three games through suspension.
Chelsea meanwhile have improved in their last two outings, picking up four points against Sunderland and Watford. A 3-1 win over the Black Cats was the perfect start for new boss Guus Hiddink however a 2-2 draw at home to the Hornets was a reality check for the former Russian boss.
One point could have been three had Oscar slotted home a penalty, however the Brazilian’s effort ballooned over the bar. The result leaves the club sitting 15th in the table, just two points outside the relegation zone.
The club could climb to 13th with a win, depending on results elsewhere, however to do that they will have to achieve something that has alluded them all season, a three game unbeaten run, plus they have a dismal away record in recent months, having failed to win any of their last six away matches in the Premier League.
The Blues have no injury worries ahead of the game but the likes of Eden Hazard, Kurt Zouma, Ramires and Loic Remy could be involved with the club facing their 2nd game in 2 days. Diego Costa will miss the game after needlessly picking up a yellow in the closing minutes of the Watford match on the weekend.
Chelsea’s only win this season over a team in the top half of the table came against Arsenal in September, when they won 2-0, but things have definitley picked up since the departure of Jose Mourinho, and Manchester Utd certainly look a side devoid of confidence, much like Chelsea a few weeks previously.
We should be set for a cracker, and with United rumoured to be already on the hunt for a new manager, the departure of Van Gaal could come round quicker than expected.
