United dominated for large periods of the encounter, and produced a much-improved display that saw them attack with intent and determination which in turn resulted in them creating numerous chances.

While the likes of Anthony Martial and Juan Mata went closest to breaking the deadlock with efforts that struck the woodwork, the hosts were unable to find a breakthrough which would have certainly eased the pressure building on their beleaguered coach.

As reported by The Telegraph, the Dutch tactician was allegedly facing the sack regardless of Monday night’s result, but the performance from his players would have perhaps reflected well on him which will boost his chances of staying.

United had lost four consecutive games in all competitions prior to their meeting with the Premier League champions, and although they failed to score again in a sixth goalless draw in their last 14 matches, there was enough evidence that the players are still firmly behind their manager.

While it’s possible that Van Gaal may well have allowed them more freedom to express themselves offensively, such was the difference in the standard of the display, if the Red Devils can build on the performance in 2016, then they may not be forced into action regarding a managerial change.

United face Swansea City at Old Trafford on Saturday, but given the intense nature of the speculation surrounding Van Gaal and his future in Manchester, is remains to be seen whether or not he is still in charge of the club come kickoff.
