Under-fire Chelsea star linked with move to Italy to end struggles

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic is reportedly a target for AC Milan as the Italian giants look to strengthen their defence.

The veteran full-back has fallen short of expectations so far this season, and has been a smaller issue in a big problem for the Premier League champions as they continue to languish in the bottom half of the table.

With his contract expiring in the summer, the Rossoneri may look to take advantage of the 31-year-old’s situation with either a move in January for a reduced price, or to sign him on a free transfer in the summer, as reported by the Metro.

Ivanovic remains a hero at Stamford Bridge having helped the club to three Premier League titles, Champions League and Europa League triumphs and three FA Cups during his time with the club, but there has been a noticeable decline in his performances in recent times.

As a result, the Blues may well look to cut their losses sooner rather than later as they try to build for the future and identify a replacement, while in contrast, Ivanovic’s experience and know-how could be beneficial to Milan.

While many will naturally suggest that the slower pace in Serie A will suit the ageing star, Milan will believe that there is plenty left that the Serbian international can offer the club in the coming years.

Having signed Alessio Romagnoli in the summer, the 20-year-old arguably needs an experienced man alongside him in the heart of the Milan defence, with Alex currently playing that role.

It remains to be seen whether or not Ivanovic’s versatility helps earn him a move to the San Siro, but he will certainly be hoping that there will be significant interest in the summer if Chelsea do decide to let him go.
