Brighton will hoping for some festive cheer when they take on Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Amex Stadium this afternoon, and with both these sides perfectly placed in the Championship it could have the makings of a classic.
The Seagulls have suffered a miserable Christmas to date, losing two and drawing one of their three games as Chris Hughton looks to put a halt on some alarming home form.
After going 21 games unbeaten the club suffered their second defeat in three games when they went down 1-0 at home to Ipswich last time out. The set-back stretched their winless run to five games with their last win coming against Charlton on the 5th December.
The club have failed to score in any of their last three games and have conceded 8. Manager Chris Hughton has taken steps to strengthen his squad with former Aston Villa defender Liam Ridgewell joining the club on-loan.
The 33 year old will join up with the Seagulls when the January transfer window opens on Saturday and will stay with the club until mid-February before returning to his parent club, MLS side, the Portland Timbers.
Ridgewell will help a defence that has been deprived of the services of long term absentee Gaeten Bong.
The club have also signed up Irish midfielder Richie Towell. The former Dundalk star comes to the club after an impressive campaign in Ireland which saw him claim a double and hit double figures in goals.
Both players won’t be involved on Friday however and will have to wait for their debuts.
Wolves meanwhile have climbed to 11th over Christmas after picking up back to back wins over Reading and Charlton. The club managed to keep clean sheets in both games, scoring three in the process after a poor run of form, and Kenny Jackett’s side now seem to have their promotion bid back on track.
The teams have drawn their last three meetings with Brighton the last team to pick up three points in this fixture, winning 2-0 at the Amex in 2013. Last season it finishes 1-1 on the South Coast.
With two quality sides with realistic ambitions of reaching the Premier League this season punters and fans are definitely in for a treat this afternoon. We fancy Wolves to heap more misery on the Seagulls at as big price of 5/2.
