There is one final Christmas present left in the drawer as the Championship’s top two, Middlesbrough and Derby meet on Saturday in their first games of 2016.
‘Boro will head into the clash as the leaders with a one game and one point advantage over the Rams. Aitor Karanka’s side have won their last three games without conceding a goal.
Last time out they beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 with Cristian Stuani goal inside the opening minute securing the three points.
Stuani will once again lead the line for the Teesiders although David Nugent will be pushing for a recall after missing the clash with Wednesday due to suspension.
Defenders Damia Abella (knee) and Alex Baptiste (leg) miss out through injury while Rhys Williams is unlikely to be involved despite returning to full fitness.
The Australian international could be sent on loan as Karanka bids to get the versatile player match-fit with Rotherham and Preston both keen.
Derby meanwhile could recall Tom Ince, Chris Martin and George Thorne to his starting line-up. The trio were somewhat controversially left out of the draw with Leeds United last time out but will return to the side for the top of the table clash.
Ince came on for Andreas Weimann against Leeds and showed his value with a goal while Martin played the final 30 minutes of the clash.
Jason Shacknell is back training and available while Scott Carson is edging closer to a return with Lee Grant once again set to deputise.
Derby have a poor record on Teeside, the club have failed to win any of their last 9 games at the Riverside and have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last 30 games.
The Rams have been kept scoreless in three of their last four games against ‘Boro.
The Riverside is becoming something of a fortress at the moment with visiting sides finding it difficult to get a foothold in games, with Boro keeping eight consecutive clean sheets at home.
If Karanka can continue this trend then three points could well be on their way to Middlesbrough, and with things getting very tight at the top of the Championship a win today could make a significant difference to proceedings.
