Wayne Rooney goal video v Swansea: Man United skipper passes more landmarks with brilliant winner

Wayne Rooney’s 238th goal for Manchester United was a crucial one as it ended their humiliating eight-match winless run in all competitions and earned them a 2-1 victory over Swansea City.

The Red Devils skipper, who had not scored in the Premier League since October, met a cross from Anthony Martial at the near post with a delightful flick for a 77th-minute winner at Old Trafford.

A strike which may ease the pressure on manager Louis van Gaal also saw Rooney pass Denis Law’s tally of 237 goals for United. He is now only 11 behind club-record holder Sir Bobby Charlton.

He also passed another former Red Devils striker in the Premier League scoring charts with his 188th in the competition. He leapfrogs Andy Cole into second, but remains a long way off Alan Shearer.

The England skipper would need another 72 goals to equal Shearer’s outstanding total. On current form, United fans will tell you that he has little chance, but will at least be chanting Rooney’s name tonight.
