Liverpool’s £20m January transfer budget: Five wingers Reds could bring in including Arsenal targets

A report in The Telegraph yesterday claimed that Jurgen Klopp has a mere £20m budget for his first transfer window as manager of Liverpool.

CaughtOffside reckons the Reds could do with a new winger or attacking midfielder because of the poor form of Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana.

Here are five options that Klopp might want to consider adding to his squad this January…

Andriy Yarmolenko – Dynamo Kiev

The Ukrainian winger has recently signed a new contract with Dynamo, but that has not stifled his ambition to test himself at a higher level, his quotes in the Liverpool Echo suggest.

He came close to joining Merseyside rivals Everton in the summer, but now it is Arsenal or Barcelona who could compete with Liverpool for his £15m signature, according to the Daily Star.

Jese Rodriguez – Real Madrid

The talented 22-year-old is hardly getting a look-in at Real Madrid because of the star power of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez, and might want to try his luck elsewhere.

Spanish publication Don Balon, cited here in The Mirror, claim that there is genuine interest in Jese from Liverpool, whose history with Madrid boss Rafael Benitez could play to their advantage.

Karim Bellarabi – Bayer Leverkusen

The 25-year-old, who has been linked with a move to Arsenal or Manchester United by The Express, has had an excellent couple of seasons at Leverkusen and has broken into the German national team.

A quick winger and confident dribbler, he would provide Liverpool with a big threat on the counter-attack, and Klopp will be fully aware of this having seen him at close quarters in the Bundesliga.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – Borussia Dortmund

Players who Klopp is familiar with – a category which Mkhitaryan would definitely slot into. The Liverpool manager signed the Armenian playmaker for Borussia Dortmund in 2013.

He is clearly still a big fan – with the Daily Mail quoting him as describing the 26-year-old as “one of the most talented players in the world”. Could there be a reunion at Anfield this month?

Lazar Markovic – On loan at Benfica

It is vitally important that Klopp signs the players that he wants, not the players who are available. If he cannot recruit them in January, he would be better off waiting until the summer to splash the cash.

In the meantime, recalling Markovic from his loan spell at Benfica would provide Liverpool with another wide option. The Serbian, 22, has bags full of talent and may benefit from a fresh start under Klopp.
