The Reds have been forced to endure a ton of injuries this season and it has affected them tremendously. However, the latest update on Rossi’s status with the club could open the door for an Anfield move.

According to the Metro, Rossi has been given free reign to pursue a move to another club on a loan move during the January transfer window. The 28-year-old Italian-American has been linked to a Liverpool move on numerous occasions since Jurgen Klopp took over the team.

Fiorentina executive vice-chairman Mario Cognigni indicated that the team feels that it might be best for Rossi to get reps with another team and return to the club at a later date when he was ready to return to form.

‘He has to understand at this time, if he wants to play elsewhere, we would like to think he will return,’ Cognigni told Corriere Fiorentino.

‘And in the future he could be of even greater value for Fiorentina.’

Rossi missed the entire 2014-15 season with an injury after scoring 16 goals in just 21 matches the year before. This season he has two assists in nine appearances in Serie A and two goals for the club in the Europa League.

In 2008, Rossi was the Olympic Golden Boot winner after scoring four goals representing Italy. The team was eliminated by Belgium in the tournament quarter-finals.
