Twice runners-up Everton will continue their bid to reach their first League Cup final since 1984 when they take on Manchester City later this evening.
Since beating Middlesbrough 2-0 in their quarter-final, the Toffee’s has shown mixed form, winning just one of their last 6 games and drawing three of them.
Last time out they drew 1-1 at home to high flying Spurs, the result coming five days after a surprise 4-3 reversal to Stoke.
Key defender for Everton Phil Jagielka is not yet fit enough to start the match despite returning from a knee injury to the substitutes’ bench against Spurs meaning John Stones and Funes Mori should continue at the back.
Gerard Deulofeu and Kevin Mirallas will hope for starts after being on the bench on Sunday while James McCarthy will be assessed after missing out against the London outfit.
Manchester City won 2-0 when the two sides met at Goodison Park in August with Aleksandar Kolarov and substitute Samir Nasri scoring the goals, and have a strong recent records over the Blues winning four of their last five games.
Manager Manuel Pellegrini will once again be without Captain Vincent Kompany, while Fabien Delph is also out however the recent returns of David Silva and Sergio Aguero has ensured they while they lack defensive cover they have the tools to make life very difficult for their opponents.
The return of Argentinian Aguero will be a welcome relief for City fans, and his form will be paramount if Pellegrini’s side are to mount a significant challenge on the Premier League title.
His return has coincided with another, Yaya Toure, who has been impressive in recent weeks. The Ivory Coast has scored three goals in his last four games, two of which have been won by City.
Toure proved to be the difference against Watford last time out as his 82th minute goal levelled the clash with the Hornets with Aguero scoring what proved to be winner two minutes later.
The result left the 2014 league cup winners just three points off the top and while a title tilt is the main focus, the chance to secure their place in a 9th League cup final would also please Pellegrini.
It should be a pulsating encounter, and with a Wembley appearance for the victor over the two legs there’s certainly plenty to play for tonight.
Predictably Manchester City are the favourites to take an early advantage back to the Etihad Stadium at a price of 6/5, while Everton should give punters a run for their money at a value looking price of 11/4.
Roberto Martinez will certainly not want to go into the return leg with a heavy defeat so we should see a tight affair at Goodison tonight.
Whatever the result, don’t miss a kick with the live streaming available online.
