Arsenal hero identifies ‘perfect’ successor for Arsene Wenger

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has insisted that the club should be looking at appointing Pep Guardiola as he would be ‘perfect’ for the job.

The Spaniard has already revealed that he has had several offers from the Premier League, with a role in England next on his agenda when he leaves Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

While the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea have all been linked with an interest, Merson believes that should a particular scenario present itself at the Emirates this year, then Arsenal should put their hat in the ring too.

“I think Arsenal is a good fit for him, if I’m being honest,” Merson said, as reported by Sky Sports. “I thought Arsene Wenger might have looked at it and thought, ‘Right, I’ve got a good chance of winning the Premier League this year’.

“He could go out in a blaze of glory and win that. He’s done great for the club, and he could say to the board, ‘I’ve been around for a long time… this man fits the bill.’

“Guardiola would come in and nothing has to change, and nothing would change. I think Arsenal don’t have to panic about different ways of playing, and I think he’s the perfect fit for Arsenal.

“But that would be up to Wenger. If Wenger knew now he could win the league, I think he would go to the board and say, ‘Get this man at all costs’.”

The Gunners currently sit top of the Premier League table and hold a two-point lead over nearest rivals Leicester City. While they will switch their focus to the FA Cup this weekend when they face Sunderland, they return to league action on January 13 when they face Liverpool at Anfield hoping to maintain their title charge.

While the January transfer window could be key for Wenger in maintaining their momentum, it remains to be seen whether or not the Frenchman is considering possibly walking away from the club in the summer if he is able to lift the Premier League title and with the assurance that Guardiola would be open to replacing him.
