Arsene Wenger confirms key Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez is still nursing hamstring injury

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has given an update on Alexis Sanchez’s fitness by ruling him out of this weekend’s FA Cup clash with Sunderland, the Daily Mirror reports.

The Chilean had been tipped to make his return to first team action this weekend following a recovery from a hamstring problem, but Wenger confirmed that the Sunderland match has come too soon.

The 25-year-old first picked up the problem during November’s meeting with Norwich and hasn’t played a game since, though Arsenal have managed to keep up a run of form without him.

“The bad news of the week is that Alexis is not quite ready. It is a precaution because of his hamstring, and it takes a few more days. He’s not bad but he’s not ready,” Wenger said.

However, there is good news for Mikel Arteta, who is reportedly fit again after his own injury layoff.

“Nothing’s changed [from the original timescale] with Santi. It could be a bit shorter with him because he’s often quicker [to recover] than you expect him to be. Cazorla and Coquelin are doing well.

“Tomas Rosicky is not far, he’s back in full training next week, so should be available soon. Mikel is available.”
