St James Park in Exeter is set to welcome Premier League visitors Liverpool for what promises to be a memorable third round FA Cup tie tonight.
Each year features a number of upset results and Exeter fans will be hoping they can be one of them against Klopp’s team.
Liverpool are currently sitting in eighth place and are undergoing a period of hit and miss form which sees them looking threatening one week and then lifeless the next.
Exeter, meanwhile, are sitting in sixteenth place in League Two. The entire Exeter team is worth a minute fraction of the Liverpool side.
However, upsets do happen, and the home side will have the backing of a sold out stadium cheering Exeter on.
Paul Tisdale’s side hopes are somewhat dampened by the fact the home side have suffered a dreadful run of form lately.
They have suffered a series of losses including recent home defeats to Dagenham and Redbridge and AFC Wimbledon.
The Grecians last won a match in early December, in the second round of the FA Cup against Port Vale. The 2-0 victory was over a month ago and since then Exeter have been defeated in all of their fixtures.
David Wheeler is set to miss the third round clash due to an ongoing ankle complaint.
The home side’s chances are helped by the probable returns of David Noble and Christian Ribeiro who have recently regained fitness after featuring as substitutes.
The visitors have looked much improved since Klopp has taken charge of the side, pulling off some memorable recent wins including victories against Leicester and recently against Stoke in the Capital One Cup.
Liverpool have been plagued by injuries as of late with a number of players suffering hamstring complaints at the same time.
Jurgen Klopp recently commented to the BBC about the Liverpool crisis
Phil’s is more serious than Dejan and Kolo but none of these players will be available on Friday…Kolo should be available next week, Dejan will be available after Manchester United. Phil Coutinho needs one or two weeks longer.
Many in the media have voiced the opinion that the injuries cannot be coincidental and must be attributed to the way that Klopp requires his players to press for prolonged periods of time.
The intensity of training sessions has also been listed as a possible cause. Liverpool do not have any senior central defenders available with Dejan Lovren and Kolo Toure ruled out, and the away side without Philippe Coutinho who is injured until February.
Jurgen Klopp may hand debuts to Liverpool Under 21’s Ryan Kent, Sheyi Ojo and Tiago Ilori for tonight’s tie.
The visitors are heavily favoured to progress to the next round and it is difficult to see the home side pulling off the upset win.
Klopp will see the FA Cup as a chance to show his managerial abilities in a season where the Premier League is most probably out of Liverpool’s reach.
Liverpool will be looking to not only advance but to do so with a convincing margin of victory and dominating attacking performance, however with everything to lose the pressure is definitely on.
