Sunderland are unlikely to get a welcome reprieve from the hardships of a relegation battle when they face Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup later this afternoon.
The Black Cats are currently second bottom of the Premier League, four points from safety and take on the current league leaders. If that wasn’t bad enough, Sam Allardyce’s men have never progressed in the FA Cup after being drawn away to Arsenal.
Twice the two have been drawn together in the competition. In 1997, Sunderland snatched a point in a 1-1 draw at Highbury only to lose 2-1 at home, while in 1991 they lost 2-1.
The Black Cats have however beaten the Gunners in the cup, famously triumphing in 1973 thanks to goals from Vic Halom and Billy Hughes in a semi-final at Hillsborough.
On that occasion the Wearside outfit went onto win the cup, beating Leeds 1-0 in the final, the success all the more impressive as Sunderland were a Championship side (Old second division) at the time.
The Gunners are aiming to win the cup for the third successive year. Successes in 2013 and 2013 gives them the opportunity to emulate the Blackburn side of the 1880s and win the cup for a third straight time.
The clash between the pair is a contrast of form. Arsenal have won 9 and drawn one of their last 9 home matches in all competitions, while Sunderland have won one and drawn one of their last 10 matches on their road.
To compound matters further, Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 7 meetings with Sunderland and have lost just one of the last 13 games.
Both sides will make changes from the teams that faced off at the start of December with Arsene Wenger likely to give some of his fringe men a run out as he prepares for upcoming clash with Liverpool.
Manchester City will be hoping to progress but face a difficult match against Norwich.
Both sides with no doubt make plenty of changes, however Alex Neil may be looking at the FA Cup as the only genuine chance of silverware and the Canaries will be hopeful of victory.
Carrow Road has become something of a fortress in recent weeks, with the side now unbeaten in their last five at home, so the 4/1 on offer on the home win could provide plenty of value.
It should be a scintillating afternoon of FA Cup ties, just make sure you take advantage with the live stream service in operation.
