Tottenham transfer news: Spurs to block Bundesliga approach for defender

Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly block a loan approach from Stuttgart for Kevin Wimmer.

The Daily Mail reports that Mauricio Pochettino wants to keep the 23-year-old as defensive cover because Federico Fazio is poised to re-join Sevilla before the end of the January transfer window.

There also seems to be interest in Wimmer, who signed for Spurs from Cologne for £4.3m in the summer – fee reported by the Daily Mail – but has made only three appearances in all competitions.

Outstanding centre-back pair Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen have played every minute of Tottenham’s Premier League season to help them to the best defensive record in the division.

Stuttgart may be able to offer the Austrian international more regular football ahead of Euro 2016, but Wimmer’s development would also be well served learning from the Belgian pair at White Hart Lane.

Wimmer has shown himself to be strong and composed in his three cup outings this campaign, and may get another opportunity to impress in Sunday’s FA Cup third-round tie with Leicester City.
