Arsene Wenger is understood to be eyeing two players who he believes will end Arsenal‘s midfield problems once and for all.

According to the Daily Star [via Bleacher Report], the Gunners have given up on their mooted approach for Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with the French coach set to turn his attentions elsewhere.

According to the Daily Mail last week, the Gunners have been eyeing a £44.6 million deal to bring the Borussia Dortmund hitman to the Emirates Stadium.

While the Gabon striker—who was recently named African Player of the Year for 2015—bagged 40 goals in 2015, Wenger is understood to have realised that his side’s weaknesses elsewhere.

As such, he’s eyeing two potential midfield options, and is understood to be considering a double transfer swoop for Borussia Monchengladbach’s Granit Xhaka and Adrien Rabiot of Paris Saint-Germain.

According to the tabloid [via the Independent], Xhaka is set to be signed for a fee of £37 million, while 20-year-old Rabiot—who was linked with a move away from PSG for much of the tail end of 2015—would come at a cost of £15 million.

The elegant Frenchman and the tenacious Swiss midfielder have the potential to transform the Gunners midfield—representing a major upgrade on the likes of Mathieu Flamini, Santi Cazorla and even Francis Coquelin—and could provide the midseason lift Arsenal need to finally end their wait for a title.
