Arsene Wenger confirms star defender is close to signing new Arsenal deal

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed that full-back Nacho Monreal is on the verge of signing a contract extension with the club, the Daily Star reports.

The 29-year-old has been in negotiations with the club over a new three-year deal worth around £60,000-per-week, and it now appears that he will finally put pen-to-paper on the extension later this week.

Wenger has previously refused to hand long-term contract extensions to players over the age of 30, but Monreal still has a month to go before his birthday.

And the Gunners boss confirmed the Spaniard will extend his stay in north London by saying: “Yes, Nacho is getting a new contract.

“It’s not completely over the line yet but we’re not far away.”

Monreal has been at Arsenal since January 2013, when he arrived from La Liga side Malaga for a fee of £8.5m (via Star).

After initially struggling to settle at the club, he has gone on to become a key member of the side this term, ousting Kieran Gibba as their first choice left-back.
