Derby County are set to welcome Reading to the iPro Stadium later this evening Championship encounter.
The home side are currently second in the table and are four points off leaders MIddelsboro, who have a game in hand.
The visitors are twelfth in the Championship and are a distant fifteen points off the home side despite having played an equal number of games.
Derby will be looking to pull of the predicted home win in order to keep the pressure on Middlesboro. Anything other than three points leaves Derby in danger of being left behind in terms of points.
Also, if the home side lose, Hull City have the possibility of leapfrogging the Rams into second if they win their fixture.
Derby come into Tuesday evening’s encounter having started 2016 in mixed form. They began the year with a disappointing 2-0 away loss to Middlesbrough which put distance between the two sides in the league.
They rebounded from this performance with a narrow FA Cup win away against Hartlepool. Prior to the New Year Derby had enjoyed a strong run of four games in the Championship, drawing once, against Leeds away, and winning a mixture of home and away games against Fulham, Ipswich and Bristol.
George Thorne’s back complaint which kept him out of the FA Cup game is likely to keep him out of contention once more against Reading.
Jake Buxton could make his first Championship appearance of the season after recovering from surgery, but the big news is that striker Nick Blackman could feature against his former side.
Reading had a rough start in the Championship towards the end of 2015 but have improved under the new leadership of the returning Brian McDermott.
Their final four league games of the season resulted in them losing three times and winning once.
2016 has started on a slightly brighter note with the Royals managing one win and one draw so far to start the year.
Paul McShane may be unavailable for the away side due to a calf problem while Michael Hector still hasn’t recovered from a recurring injury.
Derby are heavily favoured to pull off the victory at home and it is difficult to see Reading coming away with even a point. Derby arguably have more to play for – needing to put pressure on the league leaders and needing to impress their home fans.
Reading are stuck in mid table but Royals fans will be hopeful the side can push on and make a charge for the playoffs in the second half of the season.
Derby however have an enviable record at home and another three points for the home side looks on the cards tonight.
