It appeared as though Guus Hiddink’s side would be heading for a routine win after Cesar Azpilicueta had given them the lead after just 20 minutes.

However, the struggling Premier League champions were pegged back prior to half-time with Gardner scoring a spectacular goal to silence the home faithful.

While Gareth McCauley’s own goal then left the visitors with it all to do, McLean stepped up with just minutes remaining to ensure that the two sides had to settle for a draw.

After what was a battling performance from West Brom, manager Tony Pulis will be delighted that they had something to show for their efforts as they continue to build some momentum.

Things threatened to boil over after the full-time whistle, with Boaz Myhill and Diego Costa having to be pulled apart, as the Spaniard’s overall conduct throughout the game will be questioned.

Nevertheless, it was another disappointing night for Chelsea as they let a win slip out of their grasp, but a great deal of credit must go to the visitors who produced a gutsy display to pick up a point.
