West Bromwich Albion midfielder Craig Gardner scored a crucial equaliser for his side at Chelsea on Wednesday night and did so in style.
The hosts had taken an early lead through Cesar Azpilicueta, with the Spaniard taking full advantage of some poor defending from the Baggies to storm in at the back post and break the deadlock with a simple tap-in.
However, just as it seemed as though Guus Hiddink’s men were on course to continue their impressive recent form, they were unable to hold on to their lead heading into the half-time interval.
Gardner picked up possession 30 yards out from goal, before drilling his effort hard and low to evade Thibaut Courtois hand as the ball nestled into the back of the net.
Having looked comfortable early on, things certainly turned for the Premier League champions as the home supporters began to get restless with the visitors in the ascendency as Salomon Rondon went close just before the half-time whistle.
Whether or not Hiddink can inspire his players ahead of the second half remains to be seen, but it promises to be a tense night in west London.
