Liverpool set to miss out on South American defensive solution as Italian giants open talks

Liverpool‘s hopes of signing Juventus Martin Caceres have been dealt a blow with the news that Roma are keen on the defender.

According to the Express, the Reds are keen on the Uruguay international, with Jurgen Klopp eyeing the versatile stopper as a possible solution to his ongoing defensive concerns.

The German manager was forced to play Tiago Ilori—making his first appearance since returning from loan at Aston Villa—and out-of-favour full-back Jose Enrique in the FA Cup against Exeter City, with the likes of Joe Gomez, Mamadou Sakho, Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren and Kolo Toure all injured.

Against Arsenal in midweek, Sakho had returned alongside Toure, but they struggled to hold the Gunners at bay in front of an unconvincing Simon Mignolet.

As such, Klopp has been linked with defensive reinforcements, with the Express reporting that the Reds were eyeing Juventus stopper Caceres as a possible January addition.

However, the Anfield giants will have to move quickly if they are to bring Caceres to Merseyside, with Calciomercato [via Goal] reporting latterly that manager-less Roma are keen on signing the 28-year-old and will look to beat off competition from AC Milan and Inter Milan to sign the former Barcelona defender.
