Blackburn Rovers face a tricky test on Saturday as they get ready to welcome Brighton to Ewood Park.
The home side are in a vulnerable eighteenth position in the Championship, albeit with a game in hand over every team in the league except for leaders Middlesbrough.
The visitors are currently in sixth position and will be looking to take all three points on Saturday as insurance against slipping out of the playoff positions.
Both teams are on an absolutely terrible run of form which has seen them struggle to pick up any points as of late. Brighton’s most recent result saw them lose 2-0 away at twentieth placed Rotherham – a result which will inspire Blackburn to strive for a similar upset despite Brighton’s superior league position.
The home team have only one fit central defender heading into Saturday’s match – Grant Hanley. Darragh Lenihan may be used as an emergency defensive option at the weekend.
Blackburn’s injury crisis has been slightly improved by the news that the midweek substitutions of Corry Evans and Tom Lawrence mean they will be available for selection.
Danny Guthrie’s hamstring problem has also eased to the point where he may be selected.
Blackburn are undefeated in their last three Championship matches at Ewood Park – a fact giving them hope heading into the encounter with Brighton.
Brighton are on a horrible run of form, having lost three home matches in a row and knocked out of the FA Cup by Hull City.
It is likely that The Seagulls will try and mix up their team selection against Blackburn – possibly by adding Kazenga Lualua, Bobby Zamora or Sam Baldock into the side.
Brighton’s own injury crisis is horrific, keeping defenders Hunemeier, Rosenior and Bong out of the side.
Even a draw might not be enough to see Brighton remain in the top 6 as they are vulnerable to being taken over by Sheffield Wednesday.
Ewood Park is a tough place to play and Brighton will be wise to exploit the home side’s fragility in central defence aggressively and early.
Blackburn are slightly favoured for this match and the Ewood Park faithful will be in full voice to try and propel the Rovers away from the relegation zone.
It will be interesting to see whether the crisis in central defence is another to prevent Blackburn from exploiting a Brighton side low on momentum and morale.
Both teams have a lot to prove and the game should be a hard fought encounter.
