Liverpool to break the bank for Nigerian striker & Arsenal transfer target after Shane Long snub

Having missed out on Southampton’s Shane Long, Liverpool are to turn their attentions to Watford striker Odion Ighalo, Caught Offside‘s sources understand.

The Reds were found wanting in attack once again on Sunday as they failed to find the net at home against Manchester United, before falling to a late Wayne Rooney sucker punch.

Later that day, the Anfield heavyweights were rebuffed by Southampton in their attempts to bring Shane Long to Merseyside [Mirror], despite the Saints having signed Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin earlier in the weekend.

With Alexandre Pato, another mooted Liverpool target, on the brink of a move to Chelsea, Jurgen Klopp is believed to be getting desperate in his attempts to bolster his strikeforce.

As a result, our sources understand, the German coach is set to turn to Watford hitman Ighalo, and is keen to spend big in order to bring the Nigeria international to Anfield.

Indeed, while Ighalo would likely be a more costly addition than Long, the Hornets striker is more likely to guarantee goals.

Playing for the newly promoted Vicarage Road outfit, Ighalo has managed 13 goals in 21 outings in the top flight so far, and it’s tantalising to imagine what he could achieve ahead of the creative talents of the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firminio and Adam Lallana.

Arsenal are also understood to be keen on the Super Eagles frontman [Mirror].
