Man United injury news: Veteran midfielder back, 5th defender goes down

Now that Wayne Rooney has finally returned to the scoring form Manchester United fans have been waiting to see again, the Red Devils are climbing back into the hunt. With big matches in the Europa League, FA Cup and of course the Premier League over the next month, the team will need to be in top physical health to stay in contention. While the news on midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is very positive, the news on Ashley Young is a bit worrisome.

According to the Metro, Schweinsteiger is expected to return from his several week spell on the sidelines in time for Man United’s clash with Southampton on January 23. Though manager the German midfielder was believed to be healthy enough for the match against Liverpool, he was ultimately kept out.

‘It is very tight to regain (full fitness),’ manager Van Gaal said.

‘I think, he needs more time.’

Young has been forced to move around a lot due to injuries on the defense, but now he faces an unspecified injury of his own. Though Louis van Gaal sounded optimistic, Young now joins Luke Shaw, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia on the sidelines.

‘I don’t think it is a very bad injury,’ Van Gaal said.
