Liverpool secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Exeter City in their third-round FA Cup replay at Anfield on Wednesday night.
The Reds struggled to get going at times but ultimately did enough to see off their lower-league opposition, with Joe Allen opening the scoring after 10 minutes.
While they were left frustrated in their bid to find further breakthroughs until the second half, Sheyi Ojo undoubtedly made up for it and produced the highlight of the night as he curled in a wonderful left-foot strike to double his side’s lead in the closing stages.
Christian Benteke started alongside a whole host of youngsters, and although the Belgian was heavily involved in the first and third goals, he will have been disappointed not to get himself on the scoresheet as the pressure continues to build on him.
Nevertheless, Joao Teixeira added a third shortly after the second goal to put the icing on the cake, as Liverpool will now look forward to facing West Ham United in the fourth round after a straight-forward win put the difficulties of the 2-2 draw in the initial tie with Exeter behind them.
Liverpool return to action this weekend when they face Norwich City at Carrow Road, with Jurgen Klopp’s men looking to secure back-to-back wins following their defeat to bitter rivals Manchester United last weekend.
With Ojo and Teixeira scoring their first goals for the senior side, the German tactician will undoubtedly have been left delighted with what he saw from his players. Further, he also received a welcome boost with Jon Flanagan returning from injury after almost two years out, and so all-in-all it was a positive night for the hosts in front of a packed Anfield crowd.
