Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen was on the scoresheet again on Wednesday night as he handed his side the lead in their FA Cup replay against Exeter City.
Having been held to a 2-2 draw in their initial clash, the Premier League outfit entertained their lower-league opposition at Anfield hoping for an easier night’s work.
It started well for the hosts, as after some quality build-up play involving Brad Smith and Christian Benteke who played a perfect one-two between them, Smith got to the by-line and found Allen with his cross with the Welshman making no mistake.
Despite playing a bit-part role at Anfield in recent times, Allen will be hopeful that he can continue to add to his tally this season after his last-gasp heroics against Arsenal in the Premier League earlier this month.
Meanwhile, coach Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that the mix of youngsters and experienced players in starting lineup will result in a solid performance for the home supporters, particularly with Benteke looking to find his goalscoring form.
The Belgian went close after 20 minutes as he headed an excellent cross from Joao Teixeira over the bar and although he may feel as though he should have done better, the former Aston Villa striker was stretching for the ball and ultimately missed the target.
Liverpool face a trip to Norwich City at the weekend and so will be hoping that they can wrap up proceedings in midweek without the need for extra time.
