Documents have emerged revealing that Manchester City may have spent a remarkable £42 million to bring Eliaquim Mangala to the Etihad Stadium, rather than the fee originally quoted.
The club originally claimed to have spent £32 million on signing the French defender from FC Porto back in 2014, but a leaked document suggests that the Citizens actually spent a lot more.
According to the website Football Leaks—as per the Manchester Evening News—the transfer contract reveals that the Eastlands giants have been keeping quiet on the true value of the deal, understood to be over £10 million more than the club had originally admitted.
Intriguingly, the document reveals that Porto actually owned only 56.6 percent of the player’s economic rights, meaning that the other 43.33 percent was split between an Austrian marketing company and The Doyen Sports Investment Limited.
City are yet to comment on the document, which casts a further negative light on the French centre-back, who’s wholly failed to find a measure of consistency and stability in the heart of the backline since moving to England.
Indeed, City’s decision to sign Nicolas Otamendi in the summer suggests that the club are also losing faith on Mangala, with the Valencia defender being brought in at great expense to cover for the inadequate Frenchman.
