France legend backs controversial sex-tape-scandal Real Madrid star to make Euros squad

France great David Trezeguet has offered his backing to Karim Benzema‘s Euro 2016 hopes.

The Real Madrid striker is enduring a tough year, having been implicated in the ongoing Mathieu Valbuena sex-tape scandal and suspended from representing the French national side by the nation’s footballing association.

While the goals keep flying in for Benzema at club level—first under Rafael Benitez and latterly under the legendary Zinedine Zidane—it remains to be seen whether the attacker will represent the national side on home soil at the continental championships next summer.

However, according to Trezeguet—who scored in the 2000 European Championships final as France defeated Italy—the hitman has to be invited.

“Benzema must be at the Euros,” the striker told Belgian television station RTBF, as per Le Figaro.

“From a spectacle point of view, but also from a sporting point of view,” he continued. “We’re talking about an exceptional and a unique player, and [he has to go] as far as the competition which will take place in June, but also for his national side.”

The ex-attacker concluded by urging his former teammate Didier Deschaps not to ignore Benzema’s pleas for a place in the hosts’ 23-man squad next summer.

“It’s not up to me to decide,” he continued, “but I hope that they find a solution and that Benzema will be in the French team, because we know that he’s a very important player for France.”
