Top of the table Middlesbrough are set to welcome twelfth placed Nottingham Forest to the Riverside Stadium in a Championship clash on Saturday. The home side are heavily tipped for automatic promotion to the Premier League come the end of the season.
The visiting side, on the other hand, are simply trying to stay in contention for a potential playoff place, but have a significant amount of ground to cover to meet this objective. A loss for the visitors leaves them vulnerable to being overtaken and slipping down as low as sixteenth place in the table.
The home side will be looking to cement their place at the top, as a loss could see them overtaken by Hull on points, although Boro would still have a game in hand.
In a rare off-day, ‘Boro lost 1-0 to the Robins. The defeat was their first in 9 games, a run that featured 8 wins and a draw and saw them move top of the table.
Their current lead is down to two points, with Hull City piling on the pressure, Karanka will hope his side can bounce back from the set back against the Robins.
Middlesbrough have been connected with a number of players in recent days with Ross McCormack and Matty Phillips heavily linked, however with no new signings added Aitor Karanka will look to the men that lost to last weekend.
The Spanish coach could recall David Nugent and Adam Forshaw to the side after both started last weekend on the bench.
The good news is that with the exception of a 0-0 draw with Fulham, ‘Boro have won the next game they have lost this season and have not lost two in a row in the Championship since August 2014.
Forest meanwhile are in a superb run of form with 4 wins and 6 draws in their last 10 games. The unbeaten run has seen the club climb to 12th in the table, 10 points off 6th place Sheffield Wednesday.
Last time out Dougie Freedman’s men hammered Bolton 3-0 with Nelson Oliveira, Oliver Burke and Jamie Ward all getting on the scoresheet.
Freedman has had his squad boosted by the signing of defender Bojan Jokic on loan from Villarreal with the defender making a solid debut last weekend while the club will be without David Vaughan as he sits out the second of his three-match ban, following his red card against Birmingham.
The team will once again be without the services of central defender Ben Gibson who is out of the side due to ongoing trouble with a strained side. Boss Aitor Karanka may look to give a full debut to newly acquired loan player Kike Sola, of Athletic Bilbao. The striker is keen to show the form which has earned him a place in the Spanish under-21 side.
Forest benefit from an unchanged squad for the journey to the league leaders. Nottingham will be without a range of long term absentees and will also have to make do without the services of David Vaughn who is serving the rest of a suspension resulting from a recent red card.
It has been a long time since the visiting side lost a match, with their last defeat coming eleven games ago.
Most recently, Forest managed a comprehensive 3-0 victory against Bolton at home in the Championship. Middlesbrough will prove a tougher test but recent form will give the visitors hope ahead of this encounter.
Middlesbrough are favoured to win this one. If the home side are able to display the type of form which has outclassed many teams this year then they should live up to that expectation. However, Forest have been very difficult to beat as of late and definitely have the potential to pull off the upset here.
