Tottenham forward on the brink of £10.5m transfer exit

According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur have accepted an offer from Newcastle United for the services of England forward Andros Townsend.

The Daily Express have noted that Spurs have accepted a £10.5 million bid from the Magpies for the versatile attacker, and with the tabloid noting that the international is ‘desperate’ to complete an exit from White Hart Lane, it looks likely that this transfer will be completed imminently.

Townsend has become a peripheral figure at White Hart Lane this season, and hasn’t featured for the Lilywhites since playing 33 minutes during Spurs’ 2-1 defeat to Anderlecht in the Europa League on October 22.

Indeed, the 24-year-old has featured just three times in the Premier League this season—coming off the bench on each occasion—and has managed just three showings in continental competition, of which two have been starts.

If the winger is to harbour any hopes of representing England at the European Championships this summer, it appears likely that he will need to move to acquire sufficient first-team football. A switch to join Steve McClaren’s troubled but ambitious Magpies could be just the opportunity Townsend needs to revitalise his flagging career and revive his Euro 2016 hopes.
