Barcelona could still move for Real Madrid wideman after La Liga side fall short; Liverpool also linked to winger

Villarreal have failed in their attempts to sign Denis Cheryshev from Real Madrid, potentially leaving the door open for Barcelona.

According to reports, Barca are understood to be keen on the attacking talent, although as they weighed up possible moves for other targets, it had appeared as though Villarreal had stolen a march on their heavyweight rivals.

However, the Yellow Submarine’s club president Fernando Roig—speaking at the ‘EFE Encuentros’ forum, as per Marca—has revealed that his club have failed in their attempts to sign the Real star, and will now turn their attentions elsewhere.

“We tried to get Cheryshev, but it was impossible to come to an agreement,” the club administrator admitted.

Cheryshev featured on loan at Villarreal last season—to great effect—and in light of his relative inactivity at Real, it’s surely a disappointment for player and club that the Yellow Sub’s interest has come to naught.

“Last year he was an important player for us,” Roig admitted, “and the playing time we gave him increased his value significantly. We’ve made every effort possible to get him back in this window but it looks tricky.”

Liverpool have also been linked to the winger, although it would appear that Jurgen Klopp has moved onto other targets, with reports dying down in recent weeks.
