Arsenal’s quest for a third straight FA cup title faces a stern test as they take on Championship high-fliers Burnley later this afternoon.
The Gunners will be keen to get back to winnings ways after going down 1-0 at Chelsea last weekend, a result that left them third in the table, three points off leaders Leicester.
While Arsene Wenger would have relished the chance to right the wrong of last weekend and get back to winning ways in the league, the chance to make history in the FA Cup and become the first side since 1886 to win three cups in a row will be a welcome distraction.
The Arsenal boss confirmed in his pre-match conference that he would shuffle his star telling the Arsenal Official Website:
The squad should all feel more confident and they should also feel more competition for places,” he said. “My problem for selection will be bigger but when you look around you, you have players on the bench who can change the course of the game. That makes the squad stronger.
“The squad has responded remarkably well to play so many big games and win them. The fact that we suddenly have more choices at this crucial point in the season means that you can sometimes rest a player who needs a breather and that is an important luxury to have.
“If we want to compete on all fronts, that will be very important”
Wenger is likely to hand January signing Mohamed Elneny a debut. Elneny could play in a make-shift midfield alongside Calum Chambers although Francis Coquelin has overcome injury and is also in contention to start
Aaron Ramsey and Mathieu Flamini are set to be rested while fringe stars David Ospina and Kieran Gibbs will get some welcome minutes.
Burnley meanwhile are focused on returning to the Premier League next season. The Clarets are currently 3rd in the Championship are suffering relegation last season.
As part of their one and only season to date in the Premier League, Burnley lost 3-0 at the Emirates but rather than be fearful of a trip to London, manager Sean Dyche is relishing the challenge.
There’s a bit of freedom that goes with it. Statistically they don’t have many defeats at home, they are the holders and the expectation is totally on them.
Defender Michael Keane is relishing the challenge, telling FA.com:
We head there confident and I’m sure we’ll give a good account of ourselves,”
“I don’t think they’ll be looking forward to playing against us and they’ll expect a tough game, which I’m sure it will be for them.
“It’s going to be a step up from what we’ve been used to this year, but the lads have shown previously that they’re capable of doing it.
“It’s going to be tough and we’re going to have to work well to stop them from scoring.
Whatver the outcome it should provide plenty of entertainment with both sides in great form in their respective divisions, however it would take a shrewd punter to back against Arsene Wenger’s side today.
