Manchester United face transfer deadline concern as Barcelona chase influential star

With the transfer deadline fast approaching, Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal could have an unwanted headache with Barcelona reportedly chasing Juan Mata.

According to Don Balon, the Catalan giants wish to add the Spanish playmaker to their ranks, as Luis Enrique looks to add further quality and depth to his squad.

The report claims that Mata would welcome a return to his homeland after leaving Valencia for Chelsea in 2011, while the Red Devils would be willing to listen to offers.

It will likely only infuriate supporters further if the speculation is true, with Van Gaal coming under immense scrutiny for the lack of goalscoring threat that his side has posed this season.

While Mata has been the creative hub for the team at times, his departure would only starve the side of goals more so and there is no suggestion that the Premier League giants have a replacement lined up.

The 27-year-old enjoyed a successful spell at Stamford Bridge, and has become a key player for United with his versatility and creative ability.

However, he could be heading back to Spain sooner than many would have envisaged, with Barca looking to maintain their push for silverware both at home and in Europe over the coming months.

It remains to be seen how it would impact his chances to make Vincente Del Bosque’s Euro 2016 squad, while the Spanish giants will have to move quickly to complete the deal if the interest is genuine.
