John Terry: Five English centre-backs better than Chelsea legend, including Man United great, Arsenal icon

Posted by

Sol Campbell

Hated in one half of north London, adored in the other, Campbell didn’t quite have Moore’s loyalty—as Tottenham Hotspur fans will tell you—but he was a perfect specimen in the heart of the defence during his time at Arsenal.

He was a member of the Gunners’ iconic ‘Invincibles’ side, and was unlucky to be on the losing end of the 2006 Champions League final, when he found the net.

Terry Butcher

The ‘hardman’ of the English game, the iconic image of Butcher—bandaged up, but with blood pouring down his face and staining his white Three Lions kit—gives a fair reflection of one side of the defender’s game, but he was also a hugely respected individual who was an imposing presence in the heart of the backline.

Tony Adams

Apologies to the likes of Jack Charlton, Des Walker, Ledley King, Jamie Carragher and Jonathan Woodgate, but we had to round off our list with Adams.

Not only was Adams a fine centre-back—winning four Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the Cup Winners’ Cup—he also fought off his various personal demons to reach the pinnacle of the game, seeing off alcoholism and a drug addiction to lead Arsenal to the title.
