Tottenham transfer news: Spurs sign another Pochettino fledgling down to long-term contract

Tottenham Hotspur have announced that Josh Onomah has extended his contract until 2020.

It is the second new deal in a year for the teenager. He signed on for four more years in June, but has impressed Mauricio Pochettino so much that he has earned improved terms, according to The Mirror.

The 18-year-old made his senior debut for Spurs in last season’s FA Cup third round, and has taken great steps towards making his first-team breakthrough this term with 14 further appearances.

He has featured regularly in Pochettino’s squads and earned his trust. He made a cameo in November’s 1-1 North London derby draw with Arsenal, and started January’s FA Cup draw with Leicester City.

Onomah’s emergence signalled the end of Andros Townsend’s Tottenham career as the England winger moved on to Newcastle United last month, and he is the latest young talent to be tied down by Spurs.

The England Under-19 international follows fellow academy graduates Harry Kane, Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb, as well as Eric Dier and Dele Alli, in signing new long-term contracts at White Hart Lane.

Pochettino is building a squad which he may feel is capable of winning the Premier League title in the near future, perhaps even this year with Spurs third in the table and only five points off the pace.
