Wenger hit with hammer blow as Arsenal pair reveal summer retirement plans

Arsene Wenger‘s plans for a summer rebuild at Arsenal may need to be reconsidered following news that two of the Gunners’ stalwarts are planning to call time on their careers.

According to Football Insider, Wenger is set to lose veteran pair Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky at the end of the season, with both players finalising plans to retire at the climax of the current campaign.

While neither are key players for Arsenal this season—having featured eight and zero times respectively in the Premier League so far this season—they are popular and recognisable personalities at the Emirates Stadium, and represent losses to Wenger.

The French coach took steps to bolster his midfield during January when he brought Egypt international Mohamed Elneny to the club from FC Basel.

However, certain portions of the Arsenal fanbase were keen for greater investment in January, and their desires for new additions—particularly in midfield—will surely intensify following news of Arteta and Rosicky’s impending exits.
