Another path to silverware has been cut off from Jurgen Klopp after his Liverpool squad were stunned in the added time in extra time of the FA Cup by West Ham United defender Angelo Ogbonna.
Liverpool were defeated 2-1 by West Ham United at Boleyn Ground after the match went to extra time. At the 120’+1 mark, Dimitri Payet took a cross following a set piece situation that Ogbonna converted into a header to the top right corner, slipping it past Simon Mignolet for the score.
The loss was first time in three years that the Reds had been eliminated so early in the FA Cup tournament. Last season, the club made it all the way to the FA Cup semifinals before being beaten by Aston Villa.
Ironically, the same Aston Villa player who made the Reds’ life miserable in that same FA Cup game in 2015 reared his head again – only this time as a member of Liverpool. Christian Benteke, the high-profile summer pickup by the Reds, had a miserable outing, missing numerous scoring chances and wide shots – several of which could have proven game-winning had he converted during the match.
