Liverpool’s young guns will get another opportunity to shine when they take on West Ham United in their fourth round FA cup replay at Upton Park tonight.
The starlets put on a strong performance in the first tie with a lack of cutting edge ultimately costing them in a 0-0 draw.
The preparations for the game have not been ideal. A 2-2 draw at home to Sunderland was shrouded in negative headlines, not for Simon Mignolet’s latest howler but for a mass walkout by fans protesting over increased ticket prizes.
Add in the absence of manager Jurgen Klopp due to an operation on his appendix and you get a sense that preparations for the game have been far from ideal, with Klopp telling the Official Liverpool site:
We haven’t decided about the starting line-up. We now have a very important session.
“[Sturridge] was fit enough to be on the bench. He was impressive in the last session on Friday night, so we thought ‘come on, if there’s a chance for 10 or 15 minutes, we should try it’.
“We spoke to him and he said he would like to. But then the game had a different story and there was no possibility with the two early changes. Divock and Phil will be in training today too and are in the squad, hopefully, for tomorrow.”
“It’s a little bit complicated because extra-time is possible. We have to look at who will start – they can’t all start together, that’s not possible because we know we would have to change three times because the whole game would be too much in this moment.
The Reds injury woes also continued as Dejan Lovren and Joe Allen limped off against the Black Cats. The good news was the sight of Daniel Sturridge on the bench.

Steven Caulker and Jon Flanagan will also be involved while Cameron Brannigan, Joao Carlos Teixeira, Brad Smith and Kevin Stewart all set to start while Divock Origi and Phillipe Coutinho could be on the bench after resuming training.
It remains to be seen if fans finally get the chance to see Danny Ward between the sticks. The shouts for the 22 year old to start have been growing following Mignolet’s latest error.
West Ham meanwhile are likely to name a strong side as they look to bounce back from their disappointing 1-0 defeat to Southampton on Sunday and progress to the fifth round.
Defender Aarron Creswell is confident the Hammers can put in a performance, telling the official West Ham website:
“There’s a few games this season where we’ve started slowly. We can’t put a finger exactly on what it is but it’s not what we want to be doing. If you start slowly then sometimes you can’t recover.
After the game we were disappointed but there’s still plenty of reasons to be positive.
We’re sixth in the Premier League, we’ve lost just two in the last 13 and we’re still in the Cup. There’s a lot to look forward to.”
The defeat to the Saints means the Hammers, four points better off in the league in 6th place, have won just one of their last five games.
