The pressure is mounting on Valencia manager Gary Neville as his side prepare to face Barcelona in the Copa del Rey. Neville has stated in recent days that his ‘obituaries have already been written’ after a string of bad results.
The fact that Barcelona were able to beat Valencia 7-0 in the first leg of this fixture hasn’t helped matters. Realistically, there is no way that Valencia will be able to overturn the deficit and progress into the next stage of the competition.
However, Neville has a lot to prove and a strong showing from Valencia at home could ease the pressure the coach is facing.
Valencia are on a run of three straight losses in all competitions. Although their 7-0 first leg drubbing against Barcelona was embarrassing, potentially worse for the team were the league losses to Sporting Gijon and Real Betis. The side are currently sitting just outside of the relegation zone in the Spanish BBVA and moving closer to the drop zone would likely spell the end for Neville’s time in charge.
“It’s clear that we are better than some of the teams we are playing against. Our last two league matches were not performances that deserved two defeats, but the reality is that they are two defeats and I am aware of the consequences when you don’t get good results. What matters are results.
There’s no doubt that at times like this everyone needs to stay together Everyone suffers. It’s just not going for us at the moment. I continue to work, I continue to have belief.”
There has been some speculation that Neville is likely to choose a second choice team for the Barcelona match due to the need to prioritize the league. It remains to be seen whether either Enzo Perez and Paco Alcacer will make an appearance on Wednesday evening after returning to training following injury.
Shkodran Mustafi will be out of the side following a red card in the first leg.
Fans might expect Barcelona to take their foot off the accelerator after the first leg but, if recent comments by the side are anything to go by, this will not be the case. Luis Enrique has stated that Barcelona have prepared for the match as if they do not have an aggregate advantage.
There had been speculation in recent days that Lionel Messi would not be a part of the side after having recent kidney tests but it seems as if he will play a part nonetheless.
The likely opponent in the final of the competition will be Sevilla, as they hold a 4-0 advantage heading into the second leg of their own encounter. A win or draw for Barcelona on Wednesday evening would see their record of unbeaten matches extended to 29 games – overcoming the previous record set by incoming Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.
With the final fixture more or less determined it seems likely that the main story of this game will be if Gary Neville is able to alleviate some of the pressure he faces by inspiring his side to a strong showing.
