Chelsea & Tottenham transfer target backed by teammate despite ‘overweight’ suggestions

West Bromwich Albion skipper Darren Fletcher has praised his troubled teammate Saido Berahino despite the forward’s controversial campaign at the Hawthorns.

Berahino has featured only sporadically for WBA so far this season, following a summer transfer saga during which he was tipped for a move to either Chelsea or Tottenham Hotspur.

Ultimately, Berahino remained at the club, but vowed never to play for the Baggies under the club’s current management.

He has featured, but only sporadically, with coach Tony Pulis preferring to use his other attacking options.

Berahino was again linked for a move away from the club in January, but ultimately remained in the Midlands as neither Chelsea nor Spurs—nor Newcastle United, who were also tipped to be interested in the Anglo-Burundian forward—made an acceptable offer for the Albion.

Recently, the hitman has been labelled as ‘overweight’, as questions mount about his professionalism, but Fletcher has insisted that his teammate is putting the hours in.

“He’ll be great and score goals for us in the run-in, there’s no doubt about that,” Fletcher began, as per the Mirror.

“That’s why he’s here. He’s knuckling down, he’s a great lad, he’s well-liked in the dressing room and long may it continue.”
